Want to learn how to homeschool? You’re in the right place. Let’s go step-by-step.

I remember well when I desperately wanted to know how to homeschol my kids…but I had absolutely no idea how to do it.  How I wish someone could have laid out a step-by-step plan. I needed a “how to homeschool” path to make it easier!

Is Homeschool Even the Right Choice for Us?

One of the first things you have to decide is if homescholing is the right choice for your family. I’m a big advocate of homeschooling, but it’s not the right fit for everyone. In the book, we discuss all the pros and cons plus a whole lot more to help you decide.

For my family, when we made the decision to homeschool, it was not a natural, long-time-coming decision.  Instead, it was a sudden decision stemming from feeling frustrated with our current situation.

Any of this sound familiar?

  • feeling fed-up with the public school system
  • concerns for our kids’ educations
  • desperately needing a slower pace
  • wanting more family time
  • wanting time to focus on greater spiritual training
  • desire to introduce a 2nd language to our kids

There were many factors that led us to homeschool and you can read all about that in Why I Homeschool My Kids.

In the beginning, my husband and I weren’t really on the same page about if homeschooling was the right option for our family.  We both agreed there needed to be some changes, but it took a lot of conversations and considerations to determine if homeschooling was really the answer to our prayers for which we were looking.  We had to really weigh the pros and cons. So in my book, I lay it all out there so you can think it through, too.

Deciding to homeschool is a major life change that intimately impacts each member of the family. It’s a big decision and deserves a lot of consideration.

But I Don’t Know How to Homeschool

Eventually, once we made the decision to homeschool, I was so excited!  I felt amazing freedom and exhilaration.  Whew! We were going to do it! But, swiftly on the heels of that decision, I felt lost and overwhelmed.

How to homeschool?

I did not know where to begin.  Questions about how to homeschool piled up faster than answers and my mind was whirling with how to accomplish this massive educational and life change. Panic!!!

Thankfully, I knew a handful of veteran homeschool moms.  If they ever got tired of all my questions about how to homeschool, they never showed it!  Between long phone calls and hours spent sitting among piles of books with these amazing ladies, I finally began to get a handle on how this whole homeschool thing was supposed to work.

But if you don’t happen to know a bunch of veteran homeschool moms you can learn from, it’s ok. You can just snag a copy of my book and it’s like having a roomful of homeschool moms helping you out!

It even comes with a free download of all the homeschooling planning templates you need to get organized!

FigurE Out How to Homeschool Uniquely

After picking the brains of the homeschool mamas I knew, I spent weeks fine-tuning their advice to tailor-meet the needs of my kids.  Once again, the advice and input of other homeschooling families was invaluable!  I could never have made this transition alone!

And you shouldn’t either.

By the time school rolled around, we had figured out how to homeschool in a way that met the needs of our family!  Over the years, we have tweaked and modified, made big changes and little ones, and learned many lessons about how to homeschool.  We’ve even added two more children along the way!

You’re going to have to figure this out, too. But you don’t have to do it alone.

Having a book with all the nitty-gritty details and how-tos of homeschooling, will save you countless time and frustrations.

  1. This is great! And with many families with children learning from home during Covid there could be some applications towards that as well in here!

    1. Absolutely! Many parents these days are exploring different educational options for their kids and homeschooling is a fabulous choice!

  2. We experienced this for most of this school year and I give so much thanks to the teachers! It was a learning curve for us.

  3. So great! We homeschooled for a while, and it’s not out of the question!

    1. There are many families who reevaluate educational options each year, so you’re not alone! Having a support system when you do it helps tremendously for the long-haul.

    1. There are different types of homeschoolers, for sure. Unschooling is one style of homeschooling that is free-form with not much structure, which may be what you saw. But other homeschooling families are very structured and organized. It depends greatly on the parents and kids.

  4. Wow that course is totally something I’d consider. This is the first year I’ve homeschooled. I have three kids and the older two are distance learning still. But my preschooler’s school closed so I’m homeschooling him. I love it so much! My oldest wants to stay at home forever and not go back to school lol. But he’s a 4th grader and the older grades are intimidating to me. With all the changes in so many kids’ schooling this past year, I know I’m not alone in seriously considering home schooling. Your course will help many parents, I’m sure!

    1. Thanks, Chelsea! You should jump in. Sounds like this course would be perfect for you. The older grades can be intimidating, but it is completely doable and easier than you think! I hope you join us!

    1. That is a great idea! Learning about homeschooling even before your littles come along helps you develop a teacher mindset. You’ll be a great Mom!

  5. I love the action plan you provided! While I don’t personally have children, I am definitely seeing a lot of the hardships of being enrolled in a public school – especially given the hard times we are in now.

  6. When my boys were little, homeschooling was a foreign idea. The few people I knew who did it were rather strange. If I had it all to do over again, with the knowledge I have now, I would most definitely homeschool my kids. No regrets though, as I am a completely different person than I was then.

    1. I chuckled as I read your comment because it is so true! I think homeschooling has really changed with the times and is a different beast than it was even 20 or 30 years ago! Not so strange anymore and it is growing in popularity!

  7. What a great resource! We have been slowly adjusting to our new distance learning situation. With both kids home for the year because of COVID, we have definitely had to scramble.

  8. What great information! I wish I read it a year ago as we starting homeschooling for this first time this school year. It was challenging but we did it and I think I’ll be homeschooling them from now on!

    1. Elizabeth, that is fabulous that you found a new way to do school that you love! I’m sure all your hustle was well worth the effort.

  9. What a great course to offer! I homeschooled my three through high school and initially figured out on my own. We formed a homeschool co-op later that was really helpful for many families. No regrets we kept our kids home for schooling.
