Getting out the door with kids can feel overwhelming, whether you’re running errands with your littles, headed on a big trip, or just trying to manage your everyday to-do list. These seven on-the-go parenting essentials will make it doable.
I’m sharing some of my personal favorites for parenting on the go with active kids. Life is busy, and you need the best gear for managing errands, outings, and activities with kids.
Let’s make it easier to get out of the house with kids!
Why On-the-Go Parenting Matters for Families with Young Kids
When I first became a new mom, I was worried about feeling tied down with our new little one. I soon learned that babies are amazingly portable and adaptable, and that they absolutely love going outside! Heading outdoors for walks and errands became an important part of our daily routine and was good for both of us.
Enter baby #2, then three, then four, and things got a wee bit trickier. Getting out of the house became more of a coordinated effort, but I knew it was worth the struggle.
The right gear made all the difference in the world.

Benefits of Getting Out of the House with Kids
1. Kids learn through real-life experiences
Young kids learn through play and new experiences. Going to the grocery store, visiting the elderly, running errands, and park visits all offer new and intriguing opportunities for exploration, learning vocabulary, and sparking curiosity.
2. Less cabin fever for everyone
Littles are full of energy! Getting them outside in the sunshine, moving, wiggling, exploring, and walking gives them healthy ways to use that energy in positive ways.
3. Active mornings lead to peaceful afternoons
My mama’s advice was to wear kids out in the morning, and they would reward you with a good afternoon nap, and she was right. Even as kids grow and give up naps, they are more willing to engage in calm, quiet activities after an active morning in motion.
4. More joyful home rhythms
Kids are not the only ones who benefit from an active lifestyle. It is good for you too, mama, and that matters. I learned that my mental health improved when I got us all up and out the door. There is something powerful about fresh air and seeing God’s creation, along with having a plan and purpose for the day.
Yes, some days it feels like a big task just to make it out the door. But the right essentials for leaving the house with kids really do make a difference.
All you need is the right gear and a simple plan, and you can make it happen!

Practical Tips for Getting Out the Door with Kids
1. Keep a “go bag” ready
Save time and stress by always having a packed bag ready. Refill your diaper bag or tote as soon as you get home so it is ready for the next outing. Just grab water bottles and go.
2. Start small with short outings
Even stepping into the backyard or driveway counts! Start small and build confidence. Begin with a short walk around the block – and see where it leads!
3. Choose kid-friendly places
Look for places where kids can move and engage. Kids are naturally curious, so include them in what you are doing and talk through the purpose of your outing. Even better, ask for their input and see where they’d like to go.
4. Keep extra clothes in the car
Store one change of clothes per child and a backup shirt for mom in the car. This simple step brings so much peace of mind, especially during the diaper and potty-training younger years!
5. Use errands as learning opportunities
Do not avoid places where kids need to practice self-control, like the library or a visit with elderly friends. These are valuable chances to teach respect, patience, and good behavior.
6. Build simple weekly routines
Both moms and kids benefit from a gentle routine. Think through your week and create a flexible rhythm of possible outings:
M – grocery store or market
T – library
W – errands
Th – park
F – visiting the elderly
S – bike rides and outdoor play
And for rainy days when you can’t get outside, download my free Boredom Busters activity cards to keep your kids engaged at home. After all, some days it’s nice to just stay home, too! Or engage in my personal favorite – sing Bible songs!
