How the Fritaire Air Fryer Works (For Beginners!)

What Is an Air Fryer and How Does It Work?

An air fryer uses hot circulating air to cook food quickly and evenly. It mimics the crispiness of frying – but with far less oil.

The Fritaire takes this a step further by using:

  • A glass bowl instead of plastic
  • A top-mounted heating element
  • Optional tumbling and rotisserie functions for ultra-even cooking

You simply place the food in the glass bowl, set the heating element on top, choose your setting, and let it work its magic.

Understanding the Fritaire Air Fryer Attachments & Accessories

Many air fryers are boxy and have a drawer that slides open and shut. The Fritaire Air Fryer is completely different! The food is cooked inside of a glass bowl that resembles a large mixing bowl.

  • The Air Tray: If the food needs to be placed flat, there is a little tray that fits inside the bowl to keep food level. I loved this – but discovered it doesn’t provide quite enough space for a family of 6.
  • The Tumbler Basket: If food needs to tumble – like French fries or chicken nuggets – there’s a rotating tumbling basket that fits inside of the glass bowl. It allows the food to tumble around while the warm air perfectly distributes to every piece – making it crisp and crunchy.
  • The Rotisserie Spit: There’s even a rotisserie spit arm you can place through an entire whole chicken or other meats for perfectly rotated rotisserie!

My Learning Curve (Because Real Life Happens)

1. Feeling Intimidated at First

I won’t sugarcoat it – when I unboxed the Fritaire, I was a little overwhelmed. There were a lot of parts:

  • The tumbler basket
  • The rotisserie spit
  • The air stand
  • The lid/heating element
  • The actual air fryer

And honestly? The User Manual and Quick Start guide were not very helpful. I kept thumbing through them and feeling lost.

BUT – after using it 2–3 times, everything clicked. Now it feels incredibly intuitive and easy, and I don’t even think twice about using it. The Fritaire Air Fryer has an easy, intuitive touch-screen control panel and several presets that make it a cinch to use.

Just don’t get scared at the unboxing – like me!

2. How to Preheat the Fritaire Air Fryer

I loved how Fritaire had a huge QR code right on the box with links to some amazing recipes – even things like cakes and cookies! I also hit Pinterest to find tantalizing side dishes and dinner options – and preheating before cooking came up over and over as a key to success. But I was a little puzzled on how to preheat since you place the heating element on top of the glass bowl.

Preheating is simple:

  • Set your desired temperature
  • Let it run empty for 3–5 minutes
  • Add your food and cook as usual

3. The Battery Surprise (Learn From Me!)

Here’s one thing no one warned me about…

👉 The tumbling basket motor requires AA batteries.

Picture this:
I had sweet potatoes chopped, seasoned, and ready to go. I popped them into the tumbler, turned the air fryer on – and nothing happened. Yes, it’s plugged in – why is nothing happening?

After several minutes of confusion – okay, at least 10 minutes – I called my hubby who discovered:

  • The motor needs separate batteries!!!
  • There’s a physical on/off switch on the motor itself

Did we happen to have spare AAs ready to go? Nope. No batteries = no tumbling = no sweet potatoes that night.
So yes – buy AA batteries ahead of time and keep a stash on hand for future.

And you’re welcome – I just saved you 10 minutes of confusion.

4. The Self-Cleaning Cycle (My Favorite Feature!)

This is hands-down one of my favorite things about the Fritaire. Clean-up is SO easy!

To clean:

  1. Add 1–2 inches of water
  2. Add a little dish soap
  3. Set temperature to 400°F
  4. Run for 10 minutes

The water swirls around and cleans the entire glass bowl. Afterward, I just dumped out the water, wiped the top edges with a damp cloth. So easy. So satisfying.

How do you adjust an oven recipe for use in an air fryer?

You can make so much more in an air fryer than I had realized! It’s perfect for all kinds of meats – chicken, steak, seafood – as well as veggies like carrots, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, and of course, French fries. But it can also bake cakes, cookies, and just about anything else – and do it faster with easier cleanup. Plus, you can also use this air fryer to dehydrate foods.

But how can you easily convert your tried-and-true oven recipes for use in the airfryer? Simple – use the 25 Rule.

What Is the “25 Rule” for Air Fryers?

If you’re converting oven recipes, remember this simple rule:

  • Reduce cooking time by about 25%
  • Lower oven temperature by 25°F

Air fryers cook faster and hotter, so this little trick helps prevent overcooking and will make converting your recipes easy-peasy!
