6 Kid Kitchen Items We Replaced for Healthier options

I swapped out these 6 kid kitchen items for a plastic free kitchen!  If you’re kitchen is anything like mine, then it’s full of junk you no longer use and especially overflowing with plastic containers that are hazardous to the health of your family! Yikes!

My kitchen had become overwhelming!

I was running out of cabinet space and so much of it was taken up with plastic plates, cups, lids, and containers.  I’ve been hearing more and more about the health hazards of micro-plastics.  So, I finally made the time and gutted my kid kitchen items – starting with the plastics.

I went on a big kitchen clean out rampage, tossing the plastics and replacing them with kid kitchen items that are healthier and sustainable.

Here are some of the items I reached for to replace the plastics:

6 Kid Kitchen Items for a Plastic Free Kitchen

 1. Stainless steel plates & bowls

The first thing up on my plastic free kid kitchen items changeout was to toss the plastic plates and bowls my kids use every day for their meals.  I looked at a lot of different options and finally decided to go with these stainless-steel plates.

Pure transparency – I still don’t love the way they look. I kind of feel like we’re camping!

But their other features have completely made up for that!  They are dishwasher safe, shatter-proof, perfectly kid-sized, and durable!  I keep these on a low shelf in our pantry so the younger kids can grab them whenever needed.

After daily use for several months, these kid-friendly stainless-steel plates and bowls are still beautiful, shiny, and in great shape.  We use them now every single day.

2. Silicone baby food plates

For babies and toddlers, these silicone suction plates from KeaBabies are a total win for a plastic free kitchen.  They’re made from BPA-free silicone and come in the sweetest colors!

They’re a great size for little hands and since they suction down, they can’t be tossed onto the floor! Yay!  Or, if you want to make up dinners ahead, these plates come with lids and are stackable.

These can also be popped into the freezer, microwave, and are dishwasher safe, too.  Love that! They are the sweetest little plates for your littles – and so pretty!  They’ll quickly become your go-to daily plates for your babies and toddlers.

Plus, KeaBabies has bowls that suction, too! Both are so great for the littles.

3. Stainless Steel Cups with silicone liners

After throwing out the plastic plates, the next kid kitchen items to toss were our plastic cups.  I settled on these amazing stainless-steel cups.  I love these SO much!  We grabbed them in two sizes, 12 oz. and 16 oz.  The 12 0z. size is great for my younger kids while the bigger kids prefer the 16 oz. size.

Both sizes came with silicone lids and matching silicone sleeves as well as silicone tipped stainless-steel drinking straws.  At first, I thought the sleeves were just to make the cups cute and kid-friendly, but it turns out that stainless steel cups really conduct the heat or cold, depending on the beverage inside!  You’ll need those silicone liners!  Otherwise, the cups are too hot or cold for little hands to hold comfortably.  With the sleeves on, they are so easy to use!

What about the lids?  They are great lids, but not completely spill-proof.  We’ve used them quite a bit, though, when the kids were transitioning away from sippy cups, or headed outdoors, or wanted to take a drink into the living room.  Such a great deal!

4. Silicone sippy cup lids

For my youngest, I needed a toddler sippy cup that was plastic free but absolutely spill-proof.  But instead of buying separate cups just for her, I just used the same stainless steel cups above but paired them with these amazing silicone sippy cup lids from HealthySprouts.  Where have these been my whole life?

These sippy-cup lids are amazing!  They seriously can stretch to fit any cup.  Absolutely no spills, dishwasher-safe, unbreakable, and she couldn’t bite through them with her teeth. These things are incredible!

5. Glass prep jars

The next kitchen kid item for a plastic free kitchen is these cute little glass prep jars from KeaBabies.  With littles around, there is always a need for tiny jars.  Previously, I had a whole cabinet full of small plastic containers, but I slowly but surely have been replacing all of them with plastic-free options.

These little glass jars from KeaBabies are the absolute best size for prepping snacks and would work really well for baby purees, too!  They’re also a fabulous portion size for yogurt & applesauce, as well.  I like that they’re airtight and leak-proof plus you can pop them in the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher.

6. Stainless Steel Serving Spoons

One final big swap of kitchen kid items I made was to replace my many plastic serving spoons with stainless steel.  I reach for wooden spoons and silicone spatulas when cooking, but I wanted long handled stainless steel serving spoons for dishing out food for the family.

These stainless-steel serving spoons are fabulous!  The handles are coated so we don’t get burned, but there’s no plastic in the part that touches the food.  Score!

You, more than anyone else, impact the health of your kids.  Finding unbreakable, shatter-proof kid kitchen items that are not plastic has never been easier!
